Sandeep Rai Rathore, an IPS officer from the 1992 batch, has been appointed as the next Commissioner of Chennai City Police, taking over from DGP Shankar Jiwal, who is a 1990 batch IPS officer. DGP Shankar Jiwal will assume the position of the head of the police force after the retirement of C Sylendra Babu on Friday. Prior to his new role, Mr. Rathore served as the first Avadi City Police Commissioner and was recently promoted to the position of DGP-Training.
Originally hailing from New Delhi, Sandeep Rai Rathore holds MA and M Phil degrees. He pursued his studies at the prestigious Delhi School of Economics, specializing in Geography.
Throughout his career, Mr. Rathore has handled several high-profile cases, including an encounter with the notorious French serial killer Charles Sobhraj. Sobhraj targeted Western tourists in Southeast Asia during the 1970s and was responsible for over 30 murders.
