Bharat NCAP: A New Chapter in Vehicle Safety

India has taken a significant stride towards enhancing road safety with the launch of its own crash test rating assessment system, the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP). Under the Bharat NCAP, the safety standards for motor vehicles with type approval, seating up to eight people, and gross weight under 3.5 tonnes, either manufactured or sold in India, will be defined. Objective Safety Metrics for Consumers

Thorough Evaluation Process

The Bharat NCAP testing protocol encompasses global crash test standards and involves three primary areas of evaluation:

1. Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

2. Child Occupant Protection (COP)

3. Fitment of Safety Assist Technologies

These evaluations are carried out through three specific tests: a frontal impact test, a side impact test, and a side pole impact test. The comprehensive nature of these assessments ensures that various aspects of vehicle safety are thoroughly examined, providing a holistic understanding of a car's crashworthiness.

Voluntary Participation and Rigorous Testing

Initially, car manufacturers will be encouraged to voluntarily offer their vehicle models for testing under the Bharat NCAP. Once a model is selected, a team from Bharat NCAP will conduct crash tests in a controlled environment. The results will be compiled and shared with the manufacturer.
