How Will Arunachal's Revived Hydropower Projects Transform the Region's Future?

As part of a collaborative effort between the Government of India and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, 12 stalled hydropower projects with a collective generation capacity of over 11.5 GW are set to be revitalized. These projects, situated in the scenic state of Arunachal Pradesh, are expected to contribute to its economic prosperity and environmental goals significantly.

Massive Investment Potential

The ambitious undertaking is poised to attract a substantial investment of approximately Rs 1.26 lakh crore to Arunachal Pradesh. By infusing these funds into the state, the projects aim to stimulate economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and foster skill development, creating a positive ripple effect across the region.

The Green Promise of Hydropower

Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, emphasized the green credentials of hydropower, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable energy solutions. The projects hold the potential to not only harness clean energy but also raise the groundwater level and encourage the growth of local flora and fauna.

The allocation of these projects has been carefully structured, with North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) set to manage five projects with a capacity of 2,620 MW. Meanwhile, SJVN Ltd has been entrusted with five projects boasting a total capacity of 5,097 MW. The remaining two projects, with a combined capacity of 3,800 MW, have been assigned to NHPC Ltd.

Turning the Tide on Languishing Projects

These hydropower projects, originally designated for private sector development nearly 15 years ago, have languished due to various challenges. The intervention of central hydro Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) aims to reignite the projects' potential and transform them into functional contributors to the state's energy landscape.

The revival of these projects aligns with India's National Determined Contribution (NDC) target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. Moreover, these initiatives will play a crucial role in advancing the nation's commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070, a significant step towards environmental sustainability.

Beyond their immediate energy benefits, these projects hold the promise of revitalizing Arunachal Pradesh's economy, employment sector, and technical expertise. The anticipated investment inflow of Rs 1,26,500 crore is expected to invigorate the state's development and contribute to its enduring prosperity.
