Recent data regarding the examination results of Delhi government schools has sparked concerns about the quality of education being provided to students. Despite claims by the government to offer a world-class education system, a closer look at the results of the past decade reveals a significant decline. The overall pass percentage has decreased by 13.61%, with the result dropping from an impressive 99.45% in 2013 to a concerning 85.84% in 2023.

In stark contrast to these figures, the average pass percentage for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Board Exams stands at 93.12% nationwide, while the Delhi region has recorded a pass percentage of 89.24% this year. It is disheartening to note that the average passing percentage for Delhi government schools is merely 85.24%, falling significantly behind the national average.

Education experts have voiced their concerns about the current state of Delhi government schools, revealing that approximately 80% of these institutions are functioning without principals. This lack of leadership has had a detrimental effect on the overall functioning of the schools, leading to a decrease in both the number of teachers and students. Furthermore, there have been allegations that the Delhi government has purposely failed over 93 thousand students in classes 9th and 11th over the past five years to artificially inflate the pass percentages.

The General Secretary of the Government Schools Teachers Association (GSTA) shared his insights with Dainik Bhaskar, stating that the Delhi government has failed to strengthen the fundamental skills of students over the past eight years. He also emphasized that curriculums such as Environmental Studies (EMS), Happiness, and Deshbhakti (Patriotism) are diverting students' attention away from core subjects. The first three classes of the curriculum are primarily focused on these subjects, which leaves little time for students to study essential core subjects.

A Look at Delhi’s Education Budget

To gain a better understanding of the situation, it is important to examine the education budget of Delhi over the past ten years and correlate it with the declining exam results. An analysis reveals that there has been a consistent increase in the education budget during this period.

In 2013, the budget was Rs. 10,000 crore, which has progressively risen to Rs. 25,000 crore in 2023. Despite this significant increase in funding, the results of government schools have shown a decline.

Questions on Effectiveness of Allocation and Utilisation of Funds

This raises questions about the effectiveness of the allocation and utilization of these funds. It suggests that simply increasing the education budget does not guarantee improved educational outcomes. It is crucial for the government to assess and rectify the existing issues within the system, focusing on areas such as leadership, teacher recruitment and training, curriculum design, and student support mechanisms.

The declining exam results in Delhi government schools serve as a wake-up call for the authorities. It is imperative that they address the current challenges faced by these institutions to ensure that students receive the quality education they deserve. Reforms need to be implemented swiftly, including the appointment of qualified principals, enhanced teacher-student ratios, and a revised curriculum that strikes a balance between core subjects and additional topics.

The future of Delhi's education system hinges on the immediate actions taken by the government. With the right measures and a concerted effort to improve the quality of education, Delhi government schools can once again become centers of excellence, providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their future endeavors.
