In a recent special conversation with Bhupendra Chaubey, former Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar expressed his dedicated mission to combat pornography in India. Fueled by two decades of contemplation, ignited by the film "Jism," Mahurkar underscores a crucial societal concern that requires immediate attention.

The widespread availability of explicit content, facilitated by platforms like Facebook and TikTok, presents a multifaceted threat to Indian culture and society. The increase in rape cases, linked to the consumption of such material, highlights the seriousness of the issue. It's not just about entertainment; it serves as a catalyst for heinous crimes, undermining the very fabric of our society.

Critics may argue that pornography is a cultural reality, but accepting it as such means consenting to cultural erosion. Mahurkar, also the founder of the “Save Culture, Save Bharat Foundation” (SCSB), advocates for a comprehensive response involving political, legal, and public awareness initiatives.

In response to a complaint by the SCSB, SEBI and the Ministries of IT & Corporate Affairs initiated an investigation into the upcoming IPO of the UllU App, which produces sexually provocative films.

This isn't merely a question of morality, but a necessity for protecting societal values and preserving familial bonds, according to Mahurkar.

Despite the prevalence of political rhetoric and electoral agendas, the lack of discussion on this issue is glaring. The absence of substantial discourse in manifestos highlights a significant oversight in addressing a pressing societal concern. The exponential growth of online video consumption underscores the urgency for action. With India poised to become the second-largest market, the need for proactive measures is undeniable.

The proposed establishment of a Joint Content Control Authority, vested with quasi-judicial powers, represents a step toward regulating and curbing harmful content. By defining acceptable limits and imposing strict penalties on offenders, it aims to halt the spread of cultural degradation.

However, the fight against pornography goes beyond legal frameworks; it requires a collective societal effort. Parents, educators, and policymakers must work together to raise awareness and instill values that resist the allure of explicit content.

As emphasized by the former information commissioner, this is not just a legal issue; it's a moral imperative. It's about reclaiming our cultural identity and safeguarding the innocence of future generations. Through concerted efforts and unwavering determination, we can confront this societal scourge and pave the way for a more wholesome and virtuous society.

The road ahead may be challenging, but it's a battle worth fighting.
